Three Ways to Manage a House Full of Stuff During a Move

Moving house is exciting. A whole new life awaits you at the foot of a new property, and no matter whether you’re moving for more space due to a growing family, a new career, or simply because you just feel like it, you’re at the beginning of a fresh start. It’ll take a lot of work to get to that point, however. Moving isn’t easy, and one of the most significant issues you’ll face is how to transport the massive amounts of stuff you’ve accumulated from one property to another.

To help you get started, here are four ways to manage shifting everything in as efficiently as possible.

    1. Start by Decluttering

You don’t have to take everything with you. If you start by conducting a deep declutter, you’ll likely find that a considerable amount of stuff can be sold, donated, or thrown in the trash or recycled.

Decluttering the entire house can feel overwhelming, so you’ll need a clear plan to get started. Get yourself three large cardboard boxes, and label the first ‘Keep’, the second ‘Donate/Sell’, and the third ‘Trash/Recycle’. You can then go through each room systematically sorting things until everything’s clear.

You’ll need to be ruthless, though: carefully consider whether or not you really need a given item before placing it in the keep box (it can help to ask a family member for a second perspective).

    1. Use Self Storage Services

If you end up with a lot of large items that you don’t know what to do with, or you have things in your possession that you want to keep but aren’t sure where they’ll fit in the new place, storage units can be a significant help.

Self-storage can also be helpful during transitional periods. You may find yourself waiting for closing dates, for example, or facing some other unforeseen holdup that needs to be resolved, and require a safe and secure place to store your belongings while you wait.

Finally, these services allow you to stagger your move. They mean you can get started early, so you’re not rushing at the last minute.

    1. Pack Strategically

Finally, there’s the packing itself – and there’s a lot of nuance involved here. Packing can go disastrously if you’re not organised, but it’s a doddle if you think things through properly.

It’s a good idea to work from the least essential items to the most critical, and, crucially, you should be grouping types of items. You’ll be grateful for this process when you get to your new place and can place each box in its designated room, ready for unpacking. This process can shave hours off your move, so a little effort here goes a long way.

You’ll also want to get some high-quality boxes to prevent breakages and spills, and don’t forget to include bubble wrap.

    Wrapping Up

Making the effort to start arranging your belongings early will save you a lot of stress in the long run, and the information above will help you get to a place where your move is exciting rather than exhausting. Good luck!
