How to Make Your Bedroom a Better Place to Sleep

We all want to get the best night’s sleep we can, but many of us find it difficult to drift off when we head to bed after a long day, right? It is not always the case, but this is often because our bedrooms are simply not conducive to helping us sleep. This is actually good news because now you know that, you can make a few changes that will make your bedroom a much better place to sleep. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you with that.

    Better light control

One of the things that will make the most difference to how well you sleep is how much light is in the room. Even tiny amounts of light can prevent you from getting the shut-eye you need or from sleeping deeply, so this is a really important issue to address.

Investing in something like blackout blinds or made-to-measure curtains that block out all of the light is really important if there is too much light in your room at night or early in the morning. When curtains actually fit your window correctly, there are fewer gaps and less glare creeping in at the edges.

If you have any devices that emit light, even if it’s just the tiny standby light on your TV, then try to turn them off before bed, or failing that, stick some coloured tape over the light so that it is no longer visible.

    Rethink your bed setup

It might sound obvious, but it could actually be your bed itself that is stopping you from getting a good night’s sleep. The thing about mattresses is that they lose support as time goes by, so even if they still look okay, they might not be offering you the level of support you need. If you wake up stiff and achy, you might want to consider replacing it.

Pillows are also important. The right one can vastly change how well you sleep. Side sleepers, back sleepers, and front sleepers all need slightly different levels of support.  This means that sometimes, a good night’s sleep can be as simple as switching out your pillow for one that supports you better.

Oh, and don’t forget your bedding either. Sheets should be comfortable but breathable. Heavy fabrics might seem like a good idea, especially in the cooler months, but they can trap heat and leave you feeling hot and sweaty. It’s much better to go for natural fibres like cotton or bamboo, which will better help you regulate your temperature. You can always layer up when it’s colder.

    Keep clutter to a minimum

A lot of people do not realise this, but a cluttered bedroom can actually lead to a restless mind, which will make it much harder for you to get a good night’s sleep. When your surroundings feel chaotic, your mind does too, and it becomes much harder to relax. If anything doesn’t belong in the bedroom, remove it and keep it elsewhere, and don’t let laundry pile up.

    Manage noise levels

Noise is a really common sleep thief, so you will want to minimise it as much as you possibly can in the bedroom. Some sounds are obvious, like traffic or loud neighbours. Others are subtle, like humming electronics or ticking clocks, but you can do something about most of them.

If it’s outside noise that is bothering you, then you could opt for extra glazing in your windows, but if that is not affordable, a good white noise machine can block everything out and is often much less intrusive than the outside noise. Some people also find a fan helpful espeically in the warmer months.

Heavy curtains, rugs, and upholstered furniture can also absorb sound and soften the room acoustically, so they may be worth adding to your bedroom, too.

    Adjust the temperature

A room that is too warm is bad for sleep. A slightly cooler environment is generally the best for sleeping, so maybe open a window or lower the thermostat for your bedroom by a degree or two. Natural fibres for bedding, as mentioned above, will also help.

As you can see, there are lots of things you can do to make your bedroom more comfortable and more conducive to a good night’s sleep, and most of them are not too expensive, so what’s stopping you? Time to level up your sleep and start feeling refreshed.
