We all need to think of our family budgeting and what we spend as a family. Creating a personal budget together allows you to all think about ways to save money and sensible choices on where the money is spent and helps children understand as they get older how money works in the real world.
Create A Family Vision
Sit together and talk about the family budget, show them what type of things need to be paid for, household bills, food shopping, entertainment, and any loans that need to be paid. Create a savings plan together, share your goals and what you need and want to save up for. You can all create those goals together.
Creating A List Of Outgoings
Create a list of outgoings for each family member, this way you can see ways you can all save money and the things that have to be paid for. By doing this together, you are all making your family participate better and you can all make the family finances better. You can even use budgeting apps to help you figure out your finances properly, and save as much as possible. Sit down with them a look at the grocery bill, explain how much their favourite foods cost, then when your shopping you can look at alternatives that might be cheaper but taste as good. This teaches them to try new foods and explore different tastes. You could even look at creating your own family meal plan from resources like these recipes here, where you can create a selection of recipes full of foods that you all enjoy as well as explore new ideas together.
Children Having Access To Money
You need to decide on how often the children can have access to your money, are they asking for things all the time when you’re out, but not understanding how this affects the finances? Sit and decide if are you going to give the children a week’s allowance, and then they can learn how to spend it together and if so how much. This helps them learn that when the money has gone, it’s gone.
Cap Your Expenditures
Set a fixed amount of cash you can spend on different things each week, if it’s entertainment and you’ve nothing left in that month’s budget, then find something free to do that doesn’t cost any money. We’ve found so many walks that the children love to do, and it’s either free or parking and petrol costs.
Make It Easier To Save
Make it easier to save for you all, do you all eat out together a lot or takeaways? Then sit together and build a meal plan to eat at home, picking out your favourite recipes, or finding new ones. It’s a great way to share a love for food together. Even step it up another level and get them involved in the shopping as well, shows them how much food is and how to be more money savvy with the food choices.
Have A Family Goal
Create a family savings goal, something you all want to save up together for and a treat for all the new changes and efforts you have made together.
